HONOLULU- The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (12-17, 5-11 Big West) will take on No. 5 seeded CSUN (15-15, 8-8 Big West) in the opening round of the Big West Basketball Tournament on Tuesday at 4 p.m. HT on the campus of Cal Fullerton.
The 'Bows split the season series with the Matadors at a game apiece, with each squad winning on the road. The last victory went to UH, 56-54 on Feb. 22, giving them the 9-8 edge in the all-time series. In the 2016-17 season, CSUN swept UH in the season series, and knocked them off 71-64 in the BWC tournament.
Senior guard Senior Toeaina continues to be the consistent piece for the Rainbow Wahine as she notched her 14th straight game of double-digit scoring. She scored 19 points in the 67-61 loss to Cal Poly in the regular season finale on Saturday.
Toeiana has scored double-digits in 14 of 15 conference games this season with the only game not in double-digits coming on Jan. 6 against UC Davis when she scored nine. In 12 of the 15 games against conference foes, Toeaina was the leading scorer for the 'Bows with her conference season-high of 25 points coming against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 3.
CSUN enters the tournament splitting its last four games at 2-2. The Matadors are anchored by junior center Channon Fulker, the reigning 2017 BWC Player of the Year. Fulker enters the tournament at No. 3 in scoring with 18.9 points per game and No. 1 in rebounding with 12.2 boards per game. She has scored 20 points or more in 16 games this season and has had three performances of 30 points or more. In the two games against UH she combined for 58 points and 29 rebounds, including a season-high 34 points in the first matchup on Jan. 25 in Honolulu.
Tuesday will mark the 18th appearance by the 'Bows in the BWC tournament's 35 years of play. UH is 13-15 all-time and are tied at No. 6 with Cal Poly and UC Riverside for the most wins in tournament play. UC Santa Barbara leads the way by a significant margin with 47 wins and Long Beach State coming in at No. 2 with 39 wins.
The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN 3 and ESPN Radio 1420 in Honolulu.
