SandBows Keep Win Streak Alive At Gamecock Challenge

HONOLULU – The No. 3 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team extended its win streak to 11 matches with a pair of wins in the Gamecock Challenge Saturday at Wheeler Beach on the campus of South Carolina. The Rainbow Wahine (16-3) swept UNC Wilmington, 5-0, before turning back host and No. 8 South Carolina, 3-2.
 
The 11 straight wins is tied for the second-longest streak in program history. The Rainbow Wahine have two more tournament matches tomorrow with the opportunity to tie the school record for consecutive wins of 13, set during the 2015 season.
 
UH opened the day with an easy win over UNC Wilmington (9-6). The SandBows won in the straight sets on each of the five courts with the most dominant performance coming on the No. 5 court where Hannah Zalopany and Paige Dreeuws breezed past Reagan Evans and Courtney Mullinax 21-10, 21-10.
 
In the second dual match of the day, UH took on the host Gamecocks (13-3) in the first-ever meeting between the schools. The SandBows jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at the No. 4 and 5 flights. UH clinched the match at the top flight when Ka'iwi Schucht and Emily Maglio picked up a straight set win over Shannon Williams and Ali Denney. UH has now defeated four different Top 10 teams this year.

With the match already decided, South Carolina claimed the final two points at flights 2 and 3. including a straight set win by Julia Mannisto Carly Schnieder over Lea Monkhouse and Morgan Martin to end the pair's nine-match win streak.
 
The SandBows will be back in action tomorrow on the second day of the Gamecock Challenge with matches vs. Florida Gulf Coast (6 a.m. HT) and UAB (10 a.m. HT).
