HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i track and field squad wrapped up its first, and only meet hosted this season on Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics complex. Battling through heavy rains to split the dual-scored event, UH defeated San Jose State 90-88, but trailed Nevada, 107-84.
After earning three field event victories on Friday, sophomore
Kahili Novikoff was the victor for the Rainbow Wahine on Saturday, collecting gold in the discus throw just shy of her recent P.R., hitting 125-0 (38.10m). The 'Bows swept the top three positions in the event, with freshman
Brittany Kamau in second at 129-9 (37.12m), ahead of her sophomore sister
Ashley Kamau in third with a 119-10 (36.52m).
In addition, sophomore Calli-Ann Abbot surpassed the Big West qualification standard with a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles on a time of 14.80 seconds. Meanwhile, freshman
Kristen LaCosse also came in second in the 400m hurdles with a 1:03.33. Finishing third in 1:05.48, sophomore
Tatiana Desender also reached the BWC mark.
Logging a career best, junior
Karen Bulger earned second in the shot put at 43-9.75 (13.35m), while senior
Mary Kamau was fourth at 40-11 (12.47m).
Closing out the day with the last event, postponed into the evening due to the rain, the pole vault event saw sophomore
Megan Fereira finish second at a height of 11-11.75 (3.65m), her best since last year's Big West meet.
Hawai'i topped San Jose State by a score of 90-88 and trailed Nevada at 107-84 in the dual-scoring format. Nevada also defeated SJSU, 105-77.
The Rainbow Wahine will head back to the mainland next week for a big pair of events in northern California, hitting the San Francisco Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational, both running from Friday, March 30-Saturday, March 31.
