Sthamann Receives All-American Honors on Final Day of NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio.— The University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving squad concluded the fourth and final day of the NCAA Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Center by having a swimmer and a diver finish with All-American honors since 2006.

Senior Madison Sthamann joined senior Franziska Weidner as an All-American after her final performance as a member of the Rainbow Wahine in the platform dive.

"I'm very proud and happy for these Wahine," said head coach Dan Schemel. "Franzi (Franziska Weidner) and Madi (Madison Sthamann) earning All-American status in their senior season is just too cool, and for Phoebe to score at her first championships is wildly impressive!"

Sthamann showcased a flair for the dramatic as she entered her final dive of the prelims sitting at the No. 16 spot. She catapulted herself up 10 spots after successfully pulling off a two and a half summersault with one and a half twists, placing her firmly in the A finals at No.6 with a score of 265.45. Sthamann solidified herself as one the of the best in program history finishing at No. 6 in the finals and clinching the highest finish in the platform dive since Rui Wang finished at No. 2 in 2005.

"It was a great way for Madison Sthamann to finish her diving career," said head diving coach Michael Brown.  "This was the fourth consecutive time that she had qualified for the NCAA's, but the first time that she had made the A Finals and become an All American diver.  At sixth place she beat a former NCAA Champion and U S Olympic Diving Team member.  What a way to go out on top."

Sophomore Phoebe Hines wrapped her season by finishing at No. 12 in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:58.72, making her an Honorable Mention All-American. She is the first women's swimmer from UH to compete for a National Championship in the event.

After finishing at No. 7 and claiming All-American honors in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday, Weidner was back at it again on Saturday with the 200-yard breaststroke. She finished just outside the reserves, but still in the top-20 at No. 20 with a time of 2:09.58.

The UH men will now have the opportunity match the successful showing in the NCAA Championships beginning on Wednesday in Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota. Junior Metin Aydin will compete in the 200-yard individual medley, the 200-yard backstroke, and the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Olli Kokko will be in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard breaststroke. While junior Johan Sandell will dive in all three events, including the one-meter, the three-meter, and the platform.
