HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team held its annual alumni match Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center with the former Warriors stealing the show.
 
Led by current assistant coach Josh Walker, the alumni nearly topped the current Warriors before falling two sets to one, 24-26, 25-13, 17-15. In fact, the old guys beat UH's top unit in a highly competitive first set as Walker led the way with five kills. The former Warrior (2008-11) finished with a match-high nine kills and had one ace.
 
Also sparking the alumni was Ryan Leung (2013, '15), who tallied six kills and one block and Nemanja Komar (2007-09), who added five kills. Former All-American Kimo Tuyay (2001-04) had 11 assists as the alumni held match point at 14-13 in the third set before the varsity rallied to win, ending it with James Anastassiades' fourth kill.
 
Brandon Rattray led the Warriors with seven kills, one block and one ace while Stijn van Tilburg added six kills.
 
Prior to the match, a skills competition was held. Sophomore Rado Parapunov bested former Warrior Mark Presho (1990-93) and former Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Emily Maglio in a serving contest. Rattray's 71 mile per hour serve won the fastest serve contest. Former Warrior Brian Beckwith (2004-07) netted 20 balls in the setting contest to beat UH's Jayce Ashment. Maglio then ousted former Warrior Justin Ching (2008-11) and UH middle blocker Dalton Solbrig in the hitting contest, despite having to hit from the men's net.
 
The Warriors return to the court for the first-ever Big West Conference match-up with UC Irvine, Friday, Feb.  23 and Sunday, Feb. 25.
