GAME NOTES
• UH is coming off its second win of the season with a final of 69-61 against Idaho on Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Makenna Woodfolk led the way for the Rainbow Wahine with 21 points and six rebounds.
• Woodfolk has been the most consistent scoring threat for the 'Bows as she has notched double-digit scoring in four consecutive games. In seven of the first nine games, she has also accomplished the double-digit mark.
• While Woodfolk has been the top scoring threat for UH at 13.3 points per game, her ability to not turn the ball over seems to play a significant role as well. In both wins this season, Woodfolk has played north of 20 minutes with zero turnovers.
• A friendly face and a familiar name made their season debut as senior forward
Lahni Salanoa played her first minutes of the year against Idaho. In 2017-18 she was the team's fourth leading score at just over eight points a game. In her 2018-19 debut, she accounted for seven points and three rebounds in 14 minutes.
• UH leads the all-time series against HPU with a spotless 9-0 record. The only game in the series to be decided by single-digits was during the 2014-15 campaign at 76-68. UH went on to win the Big West Conference regular-season championship, then later play in the WNIT.
• Last season's affair between the two programs went to UH, 67-57 at SSC on Dec. 30. Four 'Bows scored in double digits with Sarah Toeania notching a team-high 15 points, as
Tia Kanoa,
Julissa Tago, and
Leah Salanoa all added 10 points apiece.
• Sunday's game will mark the end of a seven-game home stretch for the 'Bows, going from Nov. 16 to Dec. 9. During the span UH hosted the Bank of Hawai'i Classic, the Rainbow Wahine Showdown, and two additional games. So far, UH has gone 2-4 during the home stand.
Friendly Neighbors
Even though UH and HPU are separated by different NCAA classifications, the two programs have had an on again, off again series for over 30 years. The two teams began playing in 1982 and played a combined six games in the decade. The friendly matchup was then put on hiatus for 28-years till 2014. Since then the two O'ahu native programs have met three times, with Sunday's game being the fourth in the last five years and the third consecutive season of the matchup.
Changing It Up
Rolling into Wednesday night's matchup with Idaho, UH had gone 1-7 to open up its season and the critical factor to the slow start was the first quarter. Before Idaho, the 'Bows were minus 38 in the first quarter, forcing themselves to climb out of an early hole in all eight games. Against the Vandals, UH went with its third different starting lineup of the season with
Tia Kanoa,
Savannah Reier,
Julissa Tago,
Lahni Salanoa, and
Makenna Woodfolk. The group, plus the early rotation off the bench produced a season-high 23 points in the first quarter, with an11-point advantage over Idaho.
Looking Towards the Future
On November 14th head coach
Laura Beeman and her staff announced its 2019 recruiting class of Nae Nae Calhoun, Olivia Davies, Makayla Edwards, Kasey Neubert, and Barbara Rangel. The group is Beeman's eighth singing class with four of the five coming in as true freshmen and one as junior college transfer (Barbara Rangel). All five will be eligible to play in the 2019-20 season.
