HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (9-6, 5-1 Big West) returns home to host a pair of Big West matches. The Rainbow Wahine will take on Long Beach State on Friday, October 12 and CSUN on Saturday, October 13. Both games are slated to start at 7:00 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Saturday's match against CSUN is also the Rainbow Wahine's
"Dig Pink" match in recognition of breast cancer awareness month.
Hawai'i split their last two matches on the road last week. The 'Bows came back from being a set down to defeat UC Santa Barbara in five sets last Friday in the Thunderdome, 19-25, 25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 15-10. Then, UH almost forced a second-straight five-set match at No. 13 Cal Poly, but came up just short, 19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-27. Although Hawai'i fell in San Luis Obispo, UH was the first BWC team to take a set off of the Mustangs. UH also snapped Cal Poly's 19-set win streak and their six sweep-streak.
The Rainbow Wahine's
McKenna Granato led UH pounding down 30 kills last week in the two matches. She recorded a pair of double-doubles with 16 kills and 12 digs at UCSB and 14 kills and 13 digs plus a career-high five blocks at Cal Poly. Overall, the senior outside hitter leads UH with 191 kills, averaging 3.41 per set. She also leads UH with 24 service aces and third on the team with 142 digs.
Senior middle hitter
Sarah Liva improved her career-high in kills on sequential nights last week. At UC Santa Barbara, Liva recorded double-digits in kills for the first time as a Rainbow Wahine, putting down 11 kills to go with three blocks. Against the Mustangs a day later, Liva threw down 12 kills with a career-high six blocks while hitting .500 (12-3-18).
Junior setter
Norene Iosia had two solid performances, posting a double-double at UCSB followed by her third triple-double of the season. In all, Iosia contributed 21 kills with 47 assists, 30 digs and four blocks over the weekend. Overall, Iosia is second on the team with 129 kills and is hitting .254 with 260 assists with 15 service acs, 176 digs and 30 total blocks.
