WOODLAND, Calif. – Sweeping the conference accolades in consecutive weeks from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, this time it was the University of Hawai'i divers who collected the league's top weekly honors. Officials from the MPSF office announced on Tuesday that
Madison Sthamann and
Johan Sandell have been named MPSF/TYR Female and Male Athletes of the Week.
A senior second-year transfer from Balgonie, Saskatchewan, Sthamann won the platform event by over 80 points at the elite UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational (Jan. 12-14), topping a field of 49 women from the Pac-12, Mountain West, Western Athletic Conference and MPSF, representing much of the NCAA Zone E field. Sthamann scored a career-best 334.05 in the platform finals, which leads the MPSF this season by 57 points. Sthamann also placed third on the three-meter springboard with another personal best of 329.30, also a new top score for the MPSF. This is the first career MPSF/TYR Female Athlete of the Week honor for Sthamann, who is the reigning MPSF Diver of the Year.
A junior diver from Huddinge, Sweden, Sandell had three top-three finishes at the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational, a strong performance among the elite 24-diver field. Sandell was second place on the one-meter with a score of 344.20 and three-meter with 375.00. He also finished third off the platform with a score of 365.80. Two of Sandell's scores (3m, platform) from this past weekend lead the MPSF this year. This is the second career MPSF/TYR Male Athlete of the Week honor for Sandell, who is also the reigning MPSF Diver of the Year.
With the completion of the UCLA Invitational, the Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warriors are back to the training schedule, preparing for the MPSF Championships next month, running Feb. 14-17 at East Los Angeles College.
