LOS ANGELES – The University of Hawai'i diving teams wrapped competition on Sunday at the Spieker Aquatics Center, concluding the final day of events at the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational. The Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine closed out the meet in grand fashion, again logging top performers, but also ending the event with a win.
The 2017 MPSF Women's Diver of the Year, senior
Madison Sthamann (Balgonie, Saskatchewan) was the big winner for the Rainbow Wahine, claiming the top finish off the women's 10-meter platform on a combined mark of 627.20, topping the preliminary by 30 points. Sthamann was a stalwart performer for UH in the finals, earning the win by 87.85 points.
Sthamann's 334.40 in the final marked a career best and fell just one point shy of Rui Wang's 2005 record, producing on a big stage with roughly 80 percent of the NCAA Zone E performers in competition.
Freshman
Ivy Houser made a big move in the platform finals, jumping from eighth to fourth with a final score of 507.20, while senior
Mariah Renteria was 10th (430.95).
Junior
Johan Sandell earned his third top-three finish of the meet with a second-place score of 672.00 in the men's 1-meter springboard. Sandell also finished second on the 3-meter and third off the platform. Sophomore
Grant Newcombe finished seventh (567.75) and sophomore
Lucas Cooperman was ninth (559.95) on Sunday.
In total, Hawai'i finished with one event victory, two second-place marks, and two divers in third at the elite invitational with representation from much of the NCAA Zone E field, and programs from the Pac 12, the Mountain West, Western Athletic Conference and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
The UH divers have completed the regular season slate and now head back to the pool at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex to begin preparation for the MPSF Championships, slated for Feb. 14-17 at East Los Angeles College.
