CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team completed its first day of competition at the 2017 ICSA Sperry Women's National Championship. The Rainbow Wahine currently sit in 13th place in the Western Semifinals following a weather-abbreviated day of racing.
A total of 36 schools, divided into two 18-team regattas, took to the water with breeze coming from all directions and velocities. Stormy weather contributed to hours of delays in racing with just eight races completed in both the Western and Eastern semifinals.
The semifinals conclude Wednesday with the top nine teams from each group advancing to the finals round – an 18-boat regatta, which will take place on the last two days of the championship, May 25-26. UH is currently 32 points off the pace of ninth-place UC Santa Barbara.
Sailing for the Rainbow Wahine are
Danielle Ahir,
Gianna Bailey,
Cole Brauer,
Louise Currie,
Annika Garrett,
Caitlin Schadt and
Megan Zamzow. UH, making their 17th appearance in the women's nationals, is seeking to advance past the semifinals for the first time since 2012.
