HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (1-11, 0-2 Big West)took three of its singles matches into the third set, but No. 43 Cal Poly (13-5, 1-0 Big West) pulled away for a 7-0 win on Senior Day at the UH Tennis Complex. It was the final home match for seniors
Marcel Chan and
Spencer Travalino.
The Rainbow Warriors dropped the doubles point with a 6-0 loss on the No. 3 court with Cal Poly's Garrett Auproux and Joshua Ortlip defeating UH's
Ruben Blattner and
Eric Kenneth. No. 44 Corey Pang and Ben Donovan then knocked off UH's No. 1 duo of
Felix Albert and Chan, 6-1 to capture the point. On the No. 2 court, the score was tied at 3-3 between Hawai'i's
Igor Kolaric and
Fabian Woehrl and Cal Poly's Timothy Tan and Karl Endander before it went unfinished.
In singles, the Mustangs earned straight set wins on the No. 3, 1, and 6 courts. But, both Rainbow Warrior seniors, Travalino on the No. 5 court and Chan on the No. 4 court plus UH's No. 2 Kolaric all battled back after dropping the first set to even their matches at 1-1 by winning the second set. Travalino just came up short, falling to Axel Damiens, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 while Chan was edged out by Auproux by a break in the third, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Kolaric took an early lead in the second set then held off No. 84 Donovan down the stretch to force a third set tiebreaker. Donovan then outlasted Kolaric, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5.
Hawai'i will play its final four matches—including three Big West matches—on the road on two separate trips. The Rainbow Warriors will first play UC Davis on Monday, April 3 and Sacramento State on April 5. After a 14-day break, UH will play UC Irvine on Friday, April 21 and then end the regular season at UC Riverside on Sunday, April 23.
