Four Men’s Volleyball Seniors Bid Aloha This Week

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will look to bounce back from two losses last week with a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches against No. 14 CSUN, Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 to close out the regular season home schedule. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m., at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Following Saturday's match, four seniors will be honored during the traditional Senior Night ceremony - outside hitter Kupono Fey, setter Jennings Franciskovic, middle blocker Hendrik Mol, and opposite Iain McKellar. The foursome began their careers together as freshman in 2014 and have played in a combined 322 career matches with 211 starts.

The Rainbow Warriors (20-4, 10-4 MPSF) had several streaks come to an end during their recent two-match series sweep by No. 3 BYU, most notably a 15-match win streak. UH entered the series having won 10 consecutive straight-set matches but instead were swept twice, extending its losing streak in Provo to 15. This week, the Warriors will look to improve on their program-best 19-match win streak, which includes a perfect 15-0 mark at the Sheriff Center this season.

The Matadors (12-12, 5-10) enter this week's matches having lost six straight matches, including a pair to Pepperdine and Long Beach State last week. UH leads the all-time series 50-19 and have won six straight over CSUN.

Q: What was your favorite match as a Rainbow Warrior and why?
Our 5-set win against Pepperdine my sophomore year when I made it in the record books with 70 assists.  Not only was it a thrilling match to be apart of, but everyone on our team played amazing.  Everything was cliquing and we were able to upset a very good team that night.  Also, it gave me my first sense of what a high level our team was capable of that year.

Q: When will you graduate and with what degree?
I will graduate in May from the Shidler College of Business with a double major in Entrepreneurship and Marketing.

Q: Looking back at your volleyball career, who would you like to thank? Anyone who helped you get to this point in your career?
I would obviously like to thank my parents for all the sacrifices they made for me growing up and for shaping me into who I am today. My brother for teaching me so much growing up and for continuing to inspire me. All of my coaches throughout my early years of developing in volleyball in club and in high school.  For the entire coaching staff that I have had while at UH.  The trainers and strength coaches for keeping my healthy. Specifically, Charlie Wade for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of playing Division I volleyball and for teaching me what it takes to be a part of a successful team and for helping me grow through my time at UH.  Milan Zarkovic for teaching me to be proud of my family roots and for teaching me so much about the game that I never even thought I'd needed to know.  My teammates throughout my career especially this team for being my family away from home.  For always being there when I needed them and for truly becoming my brothers for life.

Q: What are your aspirations after college and is volleyball in your future?
I plan to pursue volleyball professionally while my body still can.  After my playing career is over I want to go back and get my MBA while hopefully being a graduate assistant to still be around volleyball.

Q: What will you always remember about being a Rainbow Warrior?
The love that I have felt from an entire state.  The fans are what I will remember most about playing volleyball for the University of Hawai'i.  The feeling I get every time I step out on this court is something I will take with me wherever I go for the rest of my life.  There truly is no better place to play volleyball in the world!

Q: What was your favorite match as a Rainbow Warrior and why?
My favorite match as a Rainbow Warrior was our first game against UCLA at home court in 2016. We played one of our best games that year, and ended UCLAs winning streak. That was also one of the first games I really felt that I got the hang of the middle blocker position.

Q: When will you graduate and with what degree?
I will graduate in May with a BA in Physics.

Q: Looking back at your volleyball career, who would you like to thank? Anyone who helped you get to this point in your career?
First of all I would like to thank my family who has taught me so much about life, and shaped me into the person I am today.  My high school coach Haruya Indo, who taught me discipline and made me a better volleyball player through my two years at ToppVolley Norge. I would obviously like to thank my UH coaches, Charlie for bringing me to this beautiful place, and teaching me the transition from an outside hitter to a middle blocker. Milan for being the most energetic and one of the most knowledgeable coaches I have ever had, Josh Walker for all of the effort he has put into bettering us, my previous coaches Spencer McLachlin and Jeff Hall for the work they did early in my UH career. Renae Shigemura for keeping me healthy these past two years, Ryan Zaporski for putting me into the best shape of my life, and all of the wonderful boosters and people surrounding our program, always being there for me and my teammates. I would like to thank our fans who love coming to our games, and provides perhaps the best playing atmosphere that I have ever witnessed. Lastly I would like to thank all the teammates that I have had throughout the years, and all the great memories we have made together. It does not stop here.

Q: What are your aspirations after college and is volleyball in your future?
Volleyball will always be a big part of my future life. I aspire to play beach volleyball for Norway starting next year, and my biggest immediate goal is to make it to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Q: What will you always remember about being a Rainbow Warrior?
I will always remember the endless support we receive every night from our incredible fans. This is such an amazing place to play, and the people who turn up at every single game are a constant reminder that we are playing for something bigger than ourselves, we are playing for the State of Hawai'i.
