SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i track and field squad completed the opening outdoor weekend on Saturday at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium, during the Hornet Invitational. Opening up strong, the Rainbow Wahine registered eight Big West Championships qualification marks in their first intercollegiate outdoor meet and first mainland trip of the outdoor season.
Welland, Ontario freshman
Alexis Brenzil registered the Rainbow Wahine's highest finish, winning her flight and finishing third in the javelin with a mark of 142-00 (43.29m). In addition, Brenzil hit a leap of 17-08.25 (5.39m) to finish 12th in the long jump.
Also competing in the javelin, junior
Karen Bulger was fifth at 137-09 (42.00m), while senior
Felicianna Vazquez finished eighth with a mark of 133-01 (40.57m). All three reached the BWC qualifying standard.
In the shot put, Burlingame, Calif. senior
Sabrina Mendoza reached a toss of 44-11.50 (13.70m) to finish seventh with a qualifying mark. Meanwhile, Washougal, Wash. freshman
Haleigh Sudbeck threw a personal best of 166-08 (50.80m) in the hammer throw to top her flight and finish 13th. Her BWC qualifying throw also ranks seventh on the all-time UH performances list.
On the track, Troutdale, Ore. senior
Courtney Andre' logged a personal-best 400m hurdles time of 1:03.80 to win her section, finish eighth, qualify for the BWC and move to No. 7 on the UH all-time performances list. In the short hurdles, it was
Calli-Ann Abbott who punched her ticket to the BWC with a UH No. 8 personal-best 100m hurdles time of 14.61, finishing in ninth place.
Leading the distance athletes, Harbor City, Calif. senior
Montana Martinez dropped her 1,500m time to 4:38.94 with an 18th-place finish. Meanwhile,
Tristan Setzer reached personal bests in both the 1,500m (4:43.89) and the 800m (2:16.14).
The Rainbow Wahine head back to the isles for their first intercollegiate home meet of the year, hosting the Rainbow Relays next week at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
