Track and Field Closes Sunrise Series With Leah Bennett Invite

Complete Results

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i track and field program went to work on Saturday morning in the outdoor season opener, closing out the Sunrise Series with the Leah Bennett Invitational at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

The meet is named after the former Rainbow Wahine who set the world record in the indoor 880-yard run in 1962 with a time of 2:17.5. She was a three-time All-American and also the U.S. Champion in the indoor and outdoor 880-yard run also in 1962.

The early heat under a vog cover escalated the challenge of the conditions quickly throughout the morning, but the Rainbow Wahine were able to produce some successful marks for the early season. Although none of the times can be officially applied for Big West Championships qualification, eight Rainbow Wahine exceeded the necessary marks.

Topping the javelin, Welland, Ontario freshman Alexis Brenzil reached a mark of 44.60m, which places her sixth among UH's all-time performers list. Sophomore Karen Bulger (40.71m) and senior Felicianna Vazquez (38.97m) also surpassed BWC-worthy marks.

After a very strong indoor season that saw her finish second in her rookie MPSF high jump appearance, freshman Lily Lowe hit 1.68m off a short approach.

Also reaching conference-worthy marks in the hurdles, rookie Calli-Ann Abbott registered a 14.94-second finish in the 100m hurdles, while senior Courtney Andre' came in at 1:05.2 in the 400m hurdles.

Another rookie with a productive indoor season, Haleigh Sudbeck tossed 49.20m in the hammer throw to win the event.

Roseville, Calif. freshman Megan Fereira made a sound outdoor debut in the pole vault, reaching 3.65m to finish just behind former 'Bows vaulter, record-holder Tiziana Ruiz Dominguez.

Among the top performances exceeding conference standards, five of the group are from the freshman class.

The Rainbow Wahine take their talents on the road quickly, heading out next weekend to Sacramento for a two-day appearance at the Hornet Invitational, March 17-18.
