Box Score - PDF  |  HTML

STOCKTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (1-4, 0-1 Big West) notched its first victory of the season with a win over Portland State, 5-2 in a neutral site, dual match on Sunday morning at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center in Stockton, Calif.  Portland State fell to 1-5 overall with the loss.

The win snapped Hawai'i's 18-match losing streak dating back to last year's opening win over Sacramento State (4-3) on January 15, 2016.

The Rainbow Warriors swept all three doubles matches over the Vikings. UH's No. 2 duo of Marcel Chan and Eric Kenneth cruised to a 6-2 win over PSU's Yousef Abdo and Russell Risenhoover to start the day. Hawai'i's No. 3 team of Ruben Blattner and Fabian Woehrl held off Ethan Lopez and Sam Larson by a break to win 6-4. On the No. 1 court, UH's Felix Albert and Igor Kolaric sealed the doubles sweep with a tiebreaker win over Nathan Boniel and Tommy Edwards, 7-6 (4). It marked the first time the Rainbow Warriors has swept all three doubles matches since the 2015 season when UH accomplished the feat against #71 UC Davis on March 26, 2015. It is the first time since April 14, 2014 (vs. UC Riverside) that UH swept the doubles matches in a road match.

In singles, Hawai'i continued to dominate, winning four of the six matches. On the No. 5 court, Blattner breezed by Risenhoover, 6-0, 6-2 while Woehrl controlled the match against Abdo at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2. UH captured the match with No. 2 Kolaric's straight set win over Edwards, 7-5, 6-2. Chan won his match on the No. 3 court over Lopez in a three-set thriller that came down to a third set tie breaker, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (4).

The Rainbow Warriors will have 11 days off before taking on three teams in Los Angeles, Calif. The 'Bows will open their roadtrip at Loyola Marymount on Friday, Feb. 17. UH will then face UNLV on Saturday, Feb. 18 and San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 19.
