HONOLULU-The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team remained unbeaten in the Big West as they edged out Long Beach State, 4-3 in a battle for first place in the BWC on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine have now won five straight matches and improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference. The Beach fell to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big West.
 
In doubles, UH's No. 2 duo of Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova was held off by the 49ers Lena Pacholski and Laura Eales, 6-3. The Rainbow Wahine evened things up with a win at No. 3 with Marina Hruba and Alzbeta Houbova defeating Natalia Munoz and Maren Helgo, 6-4. Hawai'i's No. 1 Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma combined to down LBSU's Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard by just a break at 6-4 to capture what proved to be a very important doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
 
In singles, Melounova cruised to UH's first win with a 6-1, 6-2 over Gerard on the No. 2 court. Long Beach State however quickly caught up with Munoz defeating UH's Michelle Pits, 6-2, 6-1 on the No. 5 court. UH's No. 4 Resma then knocked off Pacholski , 6-1, 6-3 and soon after, Hawai'i's No. 3 Hruba sealed the win for the Rainbow Wahine with a 6-3, 6-1 over  Helgo. With the match already decided, Long Beach State's No. 6 Eales defeated Nikola Dolakova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. In a battle of the most recent BWC Players of the Year, Razakasoa (2014 & '16) held off No. 1 Nguyen (2015) in the final match of the day, 6-0, 7-6 (5).
 
The win marked UH's second-straight win over The Beach as Hawai'i won their previous meeting on April 29, 2016 at last season's Big West Championship semifinal match by the identical score of 4-3.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will be at UC Riverside for the next match of Big West Conference on Wednesday, Mar. 10 at 1:30 pm.
