Women's Basketball Puts Win Streak On The Line In Rainbow Wahine Showdown

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team will bring its three-game winning streak into the Rainbow Wahine Showdown this week, where it will host Marist (Nov. 24), Purdue (Nov. 25) and USC (Nov. 26) over a busy three-day weekend.

The Rainbow Wahine (3-1) are riding high after a 64-63 overtime victory over San Diego that sealed the Bank of Hawai'i Classic crown on Nov. 19. Senior Sarah Toeaina locked up Bank of Hawai'i Classic MVP and Big West Player of the Week honors after averaging 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 51.7 percent from the field during the tournament. She hit the game-tying and go-ahead free throws with 3.5 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Hawai'i to victory over San Diego.

Hawai'i and Marist (1-2) will meet for the first time in program history on Friday. Marist is coming off a 78-72 loss to Northeastern after picking up its first win of the season, 85-74 over Holy Cross, at the beginning of last week. Rebekah Hand leads the Red Foxes with 19.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

Purdue is 3-1 entering the tournament after suffering its first loss of the season, 81-68, at Utah on Monday. The Boilermakers were receiving votes in this week's AP Top 25 poll after a 3-0 start to the season. Ae'Rianna Harris leads four Boilermaker double-digit scorers with 14.8 points per game. Harris is shooting 54.3 percent from the field, and also adds 9.0 rebounds per game. Andreona Keys (13.0 ppg), Karissa McLaughlin (11.0 ppg), Lamina Cooper (11.0 ppg) and Tiara Murphy (8.8 ppg) can also provide an offensive spark for Purdue. UH dropped its only previous meeting with Purdue, a 90-74 defeat on Nov. 29, 2009.

USC enters the week at 4-0 overall, and also received votes in the Nov. 20 AP Top 25 poll. The Trojans have already picked up wins over two Big West teams, beating UC Riverside (64-46) and Long Beach State (75-60). USC is outscoring its opponents by 26.3 points per game early in the season, and is dominating the glass to the tune of a +10.0 rebounding margin. The Trojans, coached by Mark Trakh in the first year of his second stint at the helm, are shooting 48.0 percent from the field. Saide Edwards' 16.8 points per game on 61.5 percent shooting is bringing up the team's field goal percentage, while Kristem Simon leads the team with 17.8 points per game.

The Rainbow Wahine are in the midst of a seven-game home stretch. The 'Bows will welcome the Big Sky's Montana State (Dec. 4) and Idaho State (Dec. 8) before hitting the road again.
