Defense, Rebounding Spark Dominant Women's Basketball Victory At Seattle U

SEATTLE – The Hawai'i women's basketball team turned in a blue-collar performance to earn a 73-58 road victory at Seattle U on Sunday afternoon.

The Rainbow Wahine combatted slow shooting through the first three quarters with fierce defense and tenacious rebounding. UH held Seattle U (0-2) to just 30 percent shooting for the game (20-of-66) and dominated the glass, 54-39.

Tia Kanoa became the first Rainbow Wahine player in 25 years to dish out 10 assists in a game, and added four points and five rebounds to her stat line. Tricia Stringam was the last UH player to record double-digit assists when she had 12 helpers against New Mexico State on March 8, 1992.

Sophomore Makenna Woodfolk led the Hawai'i rebounding effort and finished with a 15-point, 15-rebound double-double. Sarah Toeaina added 13 points and nine boards, and Julissa Tago followed up her 28-point performance on Friday with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists on Sunday.

After UH led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, the Redhawks made a run to start the fourth. Seattle U cut the UH lead to just four, 56-52, with 7:23 to play before the 'Bows hit seven of their final eight field goal attempts to seal the game with a 17-6 run. UH finished the game shooting 39 percent (28-of-71) from the field and 31 percent (8-of-26) from 3-point range, and had 17 assists on its 28 made field goals.

Amy Atwell provided a spark off the bench for Hawai'i, finishing with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting in just five minutes of action. Rachel Odumu added seven points off the bench, and Lahni Salanoa finished with seven points and seven rebounds in the game.

Alexis Montgomery led Seattle U with 16 points and eight rebounds, but shot just 6-of-24 from the field. Kamira Sanders added 12 points and six rebounds for the Redhawks.

The Rainbow Wahine head back to Hawai'i for their home-opener on Nov. 17 against Northern Arizona to open the Bank of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Classic. The 'Bows will also take on San Diego (Nov. 19) in the tournament.
