PORTLAND – Hawai'i sophomore
Julissa Tago poured in 28 points on her birthday and in her home state or Oregon, but the UH women's basketball team wasn't able to match the high-octane Portland offense in a 76-47 loss at Portland in the season-opener for both teams.
Tago connected on 12-of-21 field goal attempts, including a career-high four 3-pointers to lead the Rainbow Wahine.
Sarah Toeaina added seven points,
Leah Salanoa scored six, and
Makenna Woodfolk and
Rachel Odumu scored three each for UH.
Portland opened the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back. After the Pilots pulled ahead 16-6 with 2:27 left in the first quarter, UH trailed by double-figures the rest of the way.
The Pilots shot 49 percent from the field in the game, hitting 29-of-59 shots. UH, meanwhile, never found an offensive rhythm, connecting on just 31 percent (17-of-55) from the field. Portland also controlled the paint, where the Pilots outscored UH 34-4 for the game and enjoyed a 41-26 rebounding advantage.
Tia Kanoa dished out five assists in her UH debut after sitting out the 2016-17 season perNCAA transfer rules. UH finished with 12 assists on its 17 field goals in the game. The Rainbow Wahine also led the turnover battle, committing just 14 turnovers while forcing 16. After giving up nine turnovers in the opening half, UH had just five second-half turnovers.
The Rainbow Wahine visit Seattle U on Nov. 12 at 11:00 a.m. (HT) to wrap up their season-opening road trip. The UH home-opener is Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m. against Northern Arizona in the first day of the Bank of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Classic.
