HONOLULU – Battling the first real rain in weeks, and the gusty winds that accompanied, the University of Hawai'i track and field squad hosted its first meet of the 2017 season early Saturday morning at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in the Season Opener.

The conditions proved an advantage for 'Ewa Beach freshman
Tristen Dulay, who capitalized on a 2.7 tailwind for a pair of victories in the 60m and 150m. Dulay improved on her opening collegiate performance by .22 seconds to 7.88 in the 60m, taking her to a tie for fifth (Tasha Monroe, 2005, 2.0 wind) in the UH all-time performances list. Topping the 150m field, her 18.87 time ranks fourth in the all-time performances.

In the intermediate sprints, Castle Rock, Colo. senior
Kendall Horan reached eighth on the all-time list with an event-winning time of 42.40 in the 300m. Despite facing an extreme headwind, Powell River, British Columbia freshman
Calli-Ann Abbott slashed her 60m hurdles time by 1.22 seconds to 9.28 seconds – the 10th-best UH program time in the event.

Pacing the group facing the toughest event-specific conditions, senior
Tiziana Ruiz Dominguez topped the pole vault field with a height of 12-0 (3.66m).

Another rookie continued to shine in her specialty, as Washougal, Wash. freshman
Haleigh Sudbeck claimed the win in the hammer throw, reaching 156-4 (47.65m), also finishing sixth in the weight throw at 42-0 (12.80m). Also a young performer in the throws, Olympia, Wash. sophomore
Karen Bulger went 128-07 (39.20m) to win the javelin, finishing just outside the UH top 10, where she already holds the No. 3 mark.

The Rainbow Wahine head back out on the road, and back to Seattle's Dempsey Indoor, next week, set to compete in their second University of Washington indoor meet, Jan.27-28, at the UW Invitational.
