SEATTLE – The University of Hawai'i track and field squad opened up its 2017 indoor season on Saturday at Washington's Dempsey Indoor, taking on a field of northwest teams and elite independent runners from the region. Rookies played a prominent role for the Rainbow Wahine, while UH produced seven performances among that rank among the program's top 10 marks.

"I'm extremely pleased at how well our team kicked off the 2017 Indoor Season," head coach
Carmyn James said. "Not only were many UH All-Time top 10 performances achieved but we set a school record had a freshman win her event."

Leading the way and making her collegiate debut, Murray, Ky. freshman
Lily Lowe tied for first place in the high jump. Recording a 5-7 (1.70m), Lowe registered the seventh-highest mark for a UH jumper in her first competition in the Green and Black.

Making their first performance in replacing departed seniors
Alex Porlier Langlois and Charlida Ioane, Burlingame, Calif. senior
Sabrina Mendoza and San Diego, Calif. freshman
Michelle Altice went back-to-back at third and fourth in the shot put. Mendoza tossed 45-9.25 (13.95m) for third and the program's new sixth-best mark. Altice debuted with a fourth-place finish and a new UH seventh-best mark of 45-7.25 (13.91m).

Amber Kozaki was sixth in the pole vault with a height of 12-00.75 (3.68m).

After dropping 40 seconds from her 3,000m time during the Green v. Black intra-squad, Bakersfield, Calif. sophomore
Camille Campos made another slice off her time on Saturday. Dropping another nine seconds, Campos delivered a new Hawai'i record time of 9:40.02, surpassing Cheryl Smith's 2002 time of 9:46.3 in a 12th-place finish. Making cuts of her own, Harbor City, Calif. senior
Montana Martinez sliced 3.54 seconds and nearly eclipsed smith as well, finishing 15th with a UH third-best time of 9:46.91.

Sherwood Park, Alberta sophomore
Tristan Setzer secured a seventh-place finish in the 800m, pushing near her 2015 pace with a time of 2:19.64. Another rookie debut also highlighted the distance events, as Silverton, Ore. freshman
Maddie Fuhrman debuted with a UH fourth-best time of 3:01.15 in the 1,000m, finishing 25th.

Castle Rock, Colo. senior
Kendall Horan locked up a new career best in the 400m to lead the sprinters, recording a UH eighth-best mark of 59.78 to finish 26th. Meanwhile, 'Ewa Beach freshman
Tristen Dulay made a strong starting bid in the 60m, opening just outside the program's top 10 with a time of 8.1 in the event's preliminaries. Dulay also finished just outside UH's top times with a 26.75 in the 200m, while Horan came in at 26.79.

The Rainbow Wahine will make their first appearance at home next week, opening up the home slate with the first of the Sunrise Series, the Season Opener, on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics complex.
