WAIPAHU, O'ahu – Senior goalkeeper
Monk Berger had five saves for her third consecutive and
Sonest Furtado scored the game-winning goal in the 77
th minute as the Hawai'i women's soccer team beat Saint Mary's 1-0 on Friday night at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Hawai'i (5-0-1) extends its winning streak to five games and its unbeaten streak to six with the win. The Rainbow Wahine won the Outrigger Soccer Classic Series with the victory after beating Idaho 2-0 on Thursday.
Saint Mary's got its best opportunity in the 70
th minute when Morgan Darling took advantage of a sloppy UH pass and had an uncontested shot from about 18 yards out, but Berger thwarted the attempt to keep the game scoreless. Seven minutes later, Furtado took the ball up the field, beat her defender, and placed a low shot into the far corner of the goal past SMC (0-5-0) goal keeper Julia McDonald to put the Rainbow Wahine ahead. The goal was Furtado's second this season.
"
Monk Berger has been outstanding," Hawai'i coach
Michele Nagamine said. "All the credit goes to her and the defense. They're having each other's back and the communication has really improved."
Saint Mary's out-shot Hawai'i 11-9 in the game, and McDonald finished with three saves. The Gaels also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
At 5-0-1, the Rainbow Wahine have matched their best unbeaten start to a season since 2007, when UH finished the season 15-5-2 and advanced to the NCAA tournament. After playing at home for its first six games of the season, Hawai'i will hit the road for the first time in 2016 when it visits Colorado (Sept. 9), Denver (Sept. 11) and Air Force (Sept. 13).
