Game Notes
HONOLULU – The Hawai'i soccer team is off to its best two-game start since 2007 and looks to build on that mark this week in the second part of the Outrigger Soccer Classic Series at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine take on Sacramento State on Aug. 25 and Idaho State on Aug. 27. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
Hawai'i (1-0-1) earned co-champion status in the first weekend of the Classic, tying Oregon and beating Nevada. Junior forward
Sonest Furtado earned MVP honors as she scored the equalizer against Oregon and drew the PK that put the Rainbow Wahine ahead early against the Wolf Pack. Sophomore midfielder
Raisa Strom-Okimoto also had a stellar weekend, converting on the PK opportunity, and dishing out two assists, including helping on senior
Addie Steiner's game-winner in the 87
th minute against Nevada.
"We're doing some things that we did not have a chance to do last year, and I'm really happy with the way that they started off last weekend," sixth-year head coach
Michele Nagamine said. "I think that they showed a lot of confidence and a lot of composure. You can tell that they're buying into what we're trying to do."
Despite the success in the opening weekend, Nagamine pointed out a few areas that need improvement before the Rainbow Wahine take on the Hornets.
"We've got to open up the field more, we've got to utilize our speed, and we've got to change the point of attack more efficiently," she said. "Those are all things that we have on the board and we need to address. We started that today and we'll build off that tomorrow. It already looks better."
Sacramento State and Idaho State—both from the Big Sky Conference—have identical 1-1 records heading into the week, and are both 0-1 on the road. Sacramento State opened the season with a 2-0 win against CSU Bakersfield before dropping a double-overtime game at San Jose State.
Idaho State dropped it's season-opener 2-1 at Boise State and evened its record with a 4-2 win over Houston Baptist. The Bengals, however, have a busy week before facing the 'Bows. ISU will play Wyoming on Tuesday before making the trip to Hawai'i on Wednesday. The Bengals then play BYU-Hawai'i on Aug. 25 before wrapping up the week against UH on Aug. 27.
