The No. 2-seed Rainbow Wahine (20-10) are heading back to the Big West championship game for the second straight year and will face fourth-seeded UC Davis in Saturday's title game at 3:00 p.m. PT (1:00 p.m. HT). The game will be televised live on FOX Sports Prime Ticket.
UH connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers, including six by senior guard
Marissa Wimbley, who tied a single-game school record, and finished with a team-high 18 points. The Rainbow Wahine finished 12-of-26 from long range with senior forward
Ashleigh Karaitiana (13 pts.) connecting on three and junior guard
Briana Harris with two. In addition to Wimbley and Karaitiana, forward
Megan Huff (12 pts.) and guard
Sarah Toeaina (12 pts.) also reached double-figures.
Destiny King flirted with a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. The senior is just two assists away from becoming the fifth Rainbow Wahine in program history to record over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 250 assists.
After the Rainbow Wahine built a 12-point lead at halftime LBSU came out firing behind guard Raven Benton, who scored nine points in the third quarter, cutting down the 'Bows lead to four. But the Rainbow Wahine picked up a surge that started with a putback by Huff followed by back-to-back treys from Wimbley and Karaitiana. Huff scored on a fastbreak giving the 'Bows back a double figure lead late in the third quarter and UH out-scored the Beach, 16-5 to conclude the period for a 57-42 lead.
It was all Rainbow Wahine in the fourth quarter. Karaitiana hit a three-pointer followed by Wimbley's sixth trey to all but wrap up the game as UH built a 22-point lead.
The Rainbow Wahine led 18-12 following the first quarter and extended their lead to 36-24 at the half as Wimbley scored nine first-half points.
Benton finished with a game-high 27 points for the Beach (24-8).
UH, which out-rebounded LBSU 41-17, reached 20 wins for the second straight season, a first since 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons.
