Top Two Big West Women's Hoops Teams Clash On Saturday

Game Notes

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (17-9, 10-3 Big West) rolled to its seventh-straight win with a 70-50 victory at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night. The Rainbow Wahine will now head to Riverside, Calif. to battle the No. 1 UC Riverside Highlanders (20-7, 13-0 BWC) on Saturday in a battle of the top two teams in the Big West Conference. UCR is a perfect 13-0 in conference and are coming off an 84-62 win at CSUN on Wednesday.

Leading the Hawai'i charge is senior wing, Destiny King, who is averaging a team and career-high 10.4 points per game. She also leads the 'Bows with 31 steals and is second on the team with 62 assists. King is also second on the team averaging 6.2 rebounds per game. On Thursday night against the Titans, King became the 20th member of UH's 1,000 point club. She scored 11 points at Cal State Fullerton to raise her career total in points to 1,001. She is also just the 12th player in UH history to record over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds--joining current teammate, fellow senior Ashleigh Karaitiana.

Against the Titans, Karaitiana also hit a career milestone as she passed former UH-standout Nani Cocket for No. 2 all-time with 132 made 3-pointers. Cockett recorded 128 during her stellar career held the No. 2 spot since 1998. UH's all-time leading 3-point shooter is Megan Tinnin who has 167 treys. Karaitiana is one of UH's glue players who may not be filling the stat lines every night, but is doing the little things to keep the team moving in the right directions. She is averaging 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and leads UH with 63 assists to go with 10 blocked shots and 14 steals.

Post player Megan Huff continues her solid sophomore campaign. Huff has come off the bench in all but four games this year, but she leads UH with 6.4 rebounds per game and is second on the team averaging 9.2 points per game. She also has a team-best 24 blocked shots.

As a team, Hawai'i's dominance on the boards and on defense has escalated steadily as the season has progressed. As of this past Monday, the Rainbow Wahine lead the league in every single rebounding category and currently hold a +9.7 rebounding margin overall. In conference, Hawai'i has clamped down defensively, leading the league in scoring defense, allowing 55.8 points; 3-point field goal defense (.288) while leading the Big West with a rebounding margin of +11.6.
