Game NotesFULLERTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (16-9, 9-3 Big West) hits the road for their final regular season road trip of the year this week. The Rainbow Wahine will first take on Cal State Fullerton (3-24, 1-12 Big West) and then will battle UC Riverside (19-7, 12-0 BWC), who is undefeated in league player this year.
Â
Leading the Hawai'i charge is senior wing,
Destiny King, who is averaging a team and career-high 10.4 points per game. She also leads the 'Bows with 29 steals and is tied with teammate
Ashleigh Karaitiana with a team-high 61 assists. King is also second on the team averaging 6.2 rebounds per game. King is coming off a solid performance in leading UH to a 70-50 win over UC Davis last Thursday. In the game, King recorded her first double-double of the season with a team-high 13 points to go with 13 rebounds. King is now just 10 points shy of becoming the 20th Rainbow Wahine to enter the 1,000 point club.
Â
Sophomore post player
Megan Huff leads the 'Bows with 6.5 rebounds per game and is second on the team with 9.2 points per game. Huff has tallied a team-high three double-doubles this season, with her last one coming against Long Beach State as she set new career-highs with 18 points and 16 rebounds.
Â
Senior
Ashleigh Karaitiana has been one of Hawai'i's "glue" players all season long, doing the little things that has kept the team together and moving in the right direction. She is third on the team scoring 8.2 points per game while averaging 4.1 boards per game. Karaitiana is just one made 3-pointer away from tying former UH-great Nani Cockett for No. 2 in Hawai'i's career record books. Currently, Karaitiana has amassed 127 made treys. Cockett, who played in 1994 and from '96-98, has 128. UH's all-time 3-point leader is Megan Tinnin who drained 167 3-pointers during her four-year career.
Â
As a team, Hawai'i's dominance on the boards and on defense has escalated steadily as the season has progressed. The Rainbow Wahine lead the league in every single rebounding category and currently hold a +9.7 rebounding margin overall. In conference, Hawai'i has clamped down defensively, leading the league in scoring defense, allowing 55.8 points; 3-point field goal defense (.288) while leading the Big West with a rebounding margin of +11.6.Â
Last time out…The Rainbow Wahine battled UC Davis with sole possession of second place in the Big West on the line. Hawai'i got off to a slow start, spotting the Aggies 13 points before UH was able to score its first point on a King free throw with 2:07 left in the first quarter.
Â
After the sluggish start however, UH reserves
Briana Harris and
Marissa Wimbley helped to spark the 'Bows at the start of the second quarter with Harris making a pair of free throws on a shooting foul followed by Wimbley hitting a trey to spur on a 9-to-0 UH run to start the period. The Rainbow Wahine kept things rolling, outscoring the Aggies 21-to-9 in the second quarter to take a one point, 27-26 lead into halftime.
Â
After the break, Hawai'i continued their momentum, with their offense feeding off their defense. UH began the third quarter on a 12-to-0 run and went on to outscore UC Davis, 25-7 in the third frame alone. UH never looked back and dominated UCD for a 70-50 win.
