HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dominated Long Beach State in every phase of the game in a 60-42 victory Thursday, on the front end of a women's-men's Big West Conference doubleheader at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (15-9, 8-3 BW) moved into a tie with the Beach for second place in the Big West standings with their fifth consecutive victory and defeated the 49ers (17-6, 6-3) for the fifth straight time. Sophomore post Megan Huff had a career night, with new highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds along with four assists and one blocked shot.

UH held the Beach to 25.4 percent shooting overall, including 16 percent in the first half, which the Rainbow Wahine led 28-12. Hawai'i's defense overpowered LBSU, which suffered through scoring droughts of 7:41 in the first quarter and 6:13 in the second. Huff was so dominant she posted her fifth career double-double by the second quarter and finished the half with 13 points and 11 boards.

After a sloppy first quarter that saw the teams combine for nine turnovers and 24 missed shots, Hawai'i out-scored the Beach 18-4 in the second period and built a 16-point halftime advantage. The lead was up to 21 in the third quarter at 35-14 before the 49ers rallied to within 13 at the end of the period.

The 49ers whittled the UH lead to 11 before the Rainbow Wahine ran away down the stretch with back-to-back threes by Ashleigh Karaitiana and Marissa Wimbley, for a 57-39 lead with two and a half minutes to play.

Karaitiana suffered through foul trouble for much of the first half and finished with eight points and four rebounds. Sarah Toeaina added nine point and five boards while Destiny King posted seven points, eight rebounds, and five assists and moved into 22nd place on the school's all-time scoring list.

Madison Montgomery led the Beach with nine points. LBSU was held to season-lows in scoring and field goal percentage.

The Rainbow Wahine will take the rest of the week off before hosting UC Davis, Feb. 18 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
