Women's Basketball Welcomes HPU On Sunday

Game Notes | Free Youth Ticket Registration

HONOLULU – After consecutive games against three of the best teams in NCAA women's basketball—No. 5 Mississippi State, No. 9 UCLA, and the highest vote-getting team not ranked in this week's AP top 25, Oregon—Hawai'i will face an opponent it has historically dominated on Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine face Hawai'i Pacific University at 2:00 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The 'Bows are 7-0 all-time against Hawai'i Pacific with an average margin of victory of more than 35 points per game. However, six of those meetings took place in the 1980's, and in the only game between the two teams since the 1985-86 season, the Rainbow Wahine won by their slimmest margin in series history, an eight-point, 76-68 victory in 2014-15.

Hawai'i enters the week with a 2-6 overall record after dropping four straight games. Hawai'i Pacific is 4-2 in 2016-17, and has won four consecutive games by an average of 21.5 points per game.

Junior Sarah Toeaina leads Hawai'i with 11.8 points per game and is shooting 40.5 percent from the field, the highest percentage among players with four or more attempts per game. Senior Briana Harris adds 11.4 points per game for the Rainbow Wahine, and she is tied for the team lead with 12 3-pointers this season. Sophomore Leah Salanoa, who has also made 12 3s this season, is shooting 41.4 percent from 3-point range.

VeAnne Navarro leads HPU with 15.0 points per game while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 44.0 percent from 3. The Sharks are one of the better rebounding teams in NCAA Division II with a +4.8 rebounding margin and six players averaging more than four rebounds per game, led by Aminata Cole's 6.2.

After Sunday's contest, the Rainbow Wahine will take their final road trip of the non-conference season, visiting Nevada (Dec. 18) and Boise State (Dec. 20) before returning home for the non-conference finale against Grand Canyon on Dec. 29. Big West Conference play begins Jan. 5 at Long Beach State.
