Rainbow Wahine Take Bank Of Hawaii Classic Title With Win Over NMSU

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i women's basketball team won the Bank of Hawai'i Classic with a nail-biting 56-53 victory over New Mexico State at the Stan Sheriff Center on Sunday evening.

In a fourth quarter that featured two ties, three lead-changes, and no lead greater than six points, the Rainbow Wahine gained the advantage by converting at the free-throw line. Hawai'i didn't make a field goal in the final 3:13, but hit 5-of-8 free throws in that stretch to pick up the win.

Senior Briana Harris finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists and earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, while freshman Makenna Woodfolk scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter and had her first career double-double by adding 12 boards to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

The Rainbow Wahine committed 24 turnovers in the game but out-rebounded the Aggies 40-31 and shot 41 percent from the field while holding NM State to 32 percent overall and 22 percent from 3-point reange. UH hit 6-of-13 3-pointers, including three from sophomore Leah Salanoa, who led all scorers with 13 points.

Freshman Julissa Tago added nine points and four rebounds for Hawai'i, and sophomore Olivia Crawford scored seven points. UH (2-2) extended its home winning streak to eight games with the win.

The Rainbow Wahine will stay home for their next three games, hosting San Jose State (Nov. 25), Oregon (Nov. 26) and No. 10 Mississippi State (Nov. 27) in the Rainbow Wahine Shootout next week.
