HONOLULU – The Hawai'i women's soccer team heads to California for its final road trip of the season – one the Rainbow Wahine hope will last two weeks.
The 'Bows take on UC Irvine on Oct. 28 then visit CSUN in the regular season finale on Oct. 30. With two wins, Hawai'i could finish in the top four of the Big West Conference standings and earn its first trip to the Big West Tournament in program history, which begins Nov. 3 in Long Beach, Calif. Hawai'i (9-4-2, 2-3-1 Big West) enters the week in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Big West with seven points.
UH goalkeeper
Monk Berger has already tied her own program single-season shutouts record with seven, and broken the career record by boosting her total to 16 this season. She has a 0.96 goals-against average and .828 save percentage. Sophomore midfielder
Raisa Strom-Okimoto leads the team with 18 points off five goals and eight assists, while senior forward
Addie Steiner has a team-high eight goals.
Picking up two wins will be no easy task, however, as the Rainbow Wahine face two teams tied for first place with 13 points and identical 4-1-1 league records.
UC Irvine (12-5-1) is coming off back-to-back wins over UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly, and is 5-2 at home this season. The Anteaters may be without leading goal-scorer Kiana Palacios who missed the last two games to be with the Mexican U20 National Team. Noel Baham still brings an offensive threat to the to table for UC Irvine, with six goals and seven assists on the season. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Newsom already has eight shutouts and 12 wins on the season, and sports a 0.59 goals-against average.
CSUN enters the week with a 9-4-5 overall record and is one of the best defensive teams in the nation, ranking No. 7 in NCAA Division I with a 0.415 GAA. The Matadors have given up just eight goals in 18 games this season. CSUN is currently riding a four-game Big West winning streak, winning each of those four games by 1-0 scores.
