MALIBU, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team began play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional Championships hosted by Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Five Rainbow Warriors advanced to the Round of 64 in singles and three of UH's four doubles teams won on Day 1 to advance to the Round of 32 which will be played on Friday.
 
The day began with three Hawai'i pairs advancing in doubles. Felix Albert and Ruben Blattner held off San Diego State's Nicholas Mitchell and Joel Popov by a break, 8-6, while the 'Bows' Marcel Chan and Igor Kolaric knocked off Arizona's Trent Botha and Alejandro Requant-Bicardi, 8-5. UH's Christopher Cajigan and Erik Kenneth's opponents Gage Brymer and Daniel Gealer form UCLA withdrew due to injury.
 
In the singles Round of 128, three Rainbow Warriors won in straight sets and two won in three sets. Kenneth defeated Loyola Marymount's Ryan Brown, 6-2, 6-3. Kolaric edged out San Diego State's Santiago Cevallos in a first set tie-breaker and then pulled away in the second set, 7-6 (5), 6-2 while Chan knocked off Gregoire Balenci (Grand Canyon), 6-1, 7-5. Albert bounced back after falling in a tie-breaker in the first to defeat Grand Canyon's Philip Kuehnen, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-0. Fabian Woehrl won the first set but fell in the second in a tie-breaker before battling back in the third set to win 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3.
 
Unfortunately, in the Round of 64, all five Rainbow Warriors fell. All five will compete in the tournament's consolation rounds on Friday.
