WAIPAHU--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team continued play in the USTA's 2016 Aloha Cup on Saturday at the Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex in Waipahu, O'ahu.
In the Round of 16 for singles, three Rainbow Warriors advanced to play in the quarterfinals. Third-seeded
Felix Albert defeated fellow teammate Fabian Woehrl, 6-0, 6-0 to start the day. No. 7
Igor Kolaric held off fellow Rainbow Warrior,
Ruben Blattner, 6-3, 6-4 while 4th-seeded
Marcel Chan had a three-set battle against Wei Yu Su with Chan moving on with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win.
In the quarterfinals, Albert advanced to Sunday's semifinals with a 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 8 Clemens Graute, while Kolaric knocked off Chan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
The doubles competition also began on Saturday. In the Round of 16, UH's three pairs all won their matches. Fourth-seeded Blattner and Kolaric nearly blanked Marc Cayetano and Jathniel John Alvarico, 6-1, 6-1.
Spencer Travalino and Fabian Woehrl defeated Shawn Morimoto and Alec Schumacker, 7-6, 6-3, while
Eric Kenneth and
Nikolai Storch outlasted Jordan Azuma and Phuc Huynh in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarters, No. 2-seed Albert and Chan held off teammates Kenneth and Storch, 6-4, 6-4. Blattner and Kolaric stayed alive with a 6-0, 6-3 win over John Dye and Rob Lim. But Travalino and Woehrl fell to the top-seeded Filip Dolezal and Alexander Meyer, 6-2, 6-3.
On Sunday, the semifinals in singles will feature Kolaric facing-off against Meyer as Albert faces Dolezal. Both singles matches will start at 8:00 am. In doubles, UH will have pairs on both sides of the bracket with Albert and Chan taking on Nikola Petrov and Yann Renault while Blattner and Kolaric wil battle Dolezel and Meyer. Both doubles matches are slated to start at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
