The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (11-9, 4-3 Big West) will take on UC Irvine (4-17, 1-6 Big West) on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 5:30 pm on Patsy T. Mink Night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Saturday's game is the first half of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team, which will be playing Long Beach State at 8:00 pm. Prior to the women's game, Mink's brother Eugene and his wife will be recognized in honor of Mink's pioneering efforts to co-author the Title IX Amendment of the Higher Education Act. In addition, during halftime of Saturday's game, students sitting in the student section will receive Minion outfits to wear for the following men's basketball game for Cartoon Character Night.
On Thursday night, the Rainbow Wahine held off Cal State Fullerton for a 62-53 win.
Destiny King came through in the clutch for the 'Bows, scoring nine of ther 12 points in the second half--including back-to-back buckets after the Titans had overcome a 13-point deficit to take a one point lead with 6:50 left in the game to give UH a 50-47 lead. The Rainbow Wahine never looked back. UH hit 9-of-12 free throws with less that three minutes left in the game--including two by King--to seal the win.
Coming off the bench and making a significant impact for Hawai'i both on offense and defense was
Brianna Kennedy who had a career-high eight rebounds, three blocks and 25 minutes played. She also added four points, an assist and a steal.
About the Anteaters...UC Irvine recently snapped their 11-game losing streak last week with a 62-58 win over Cal State Fullerton this past Saturday. Yesterday (Thursday), UCI fell to CSUN in Irvine, 64-83. Junior forward Mokun Fajemisin has been a solid presence in the post and leads the Anteaters averaging 9.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She is the Big West's leader with 36 blocked shots which averages to 2.1 per game. Shereen Sutherland has poured in the most points for the Anteaters with 177 on 73-for-175 shooting from the floor with four treys and 27 made free throws. She is second on the squad with 5.4 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. Raelyn Cheung-Sutton is the lone Anteater to have started all 21 games this season for UCI. She leads the league by far with 133 assists and 6.3 assists per game. She also leads her team with 28 steals and logging at team-high 30.5 minutes per game.
