Game NotesHONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (10-9, 3-3 Big West) returns home to host a pair of conference games. The Rainbow Wahine will open against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7:00 p.m. which is also Military Appreciation Night in the Stan Sheriff Center. UH will then take on UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 5:30 pm on Patsy T. Mink Night. Saturday's game is the first half of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team which will be playing Long Beach State at 8:00 pm.
Last week, the Rainbow Wahine split their two conference road games. UH defeated UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center on Thursday, 83-65, but then fell at CSUN, 63-60 in the Matadome on Saturday night to even their conference record at 3-3.
Senior
Destiny King continues to lead the 'Bows on offense, averaging 10.0 points per game. She also leads UH with 48 assists (tied with
Ashleigh Karaitiana) and 25 steals. King is second on the team with 109 total rebounds and is tied for second on the squad averaging 5.7 boards per game. Sophomore post player
Megan Huff leads UH and is ranked No. 9 in the Big West with 6.1 rebounds per game and 115 total rebounds. On offense, Huff has also been strong, scoring 8.9 points per game--including game-highs of 15 and 12 points respectively in UH's two most recent games.
Also having a standout season is senior center
Kalei Adolpho. After taking last year off to focus on her final season on the Rainbow Wahine Volleyball team, Adolpho has come back to be a difference maker in the middle. She leads UH with a .504 field-goal percentage (which ranks her at No. 3 in the Big West), hitting 65-of-129 shots from the floor. Adolpho is tied for second on the team with King with 5.7 rebounds per game and is third in total rebounds with 108 while scoring 7.9 points per game.
About the Titans...Cal State Fullerton comes to Honolulu with a 2-17 overall record and an 0-5 mark in conference action. After winning their first two games against Portland State and Loyola Marymount, the Titans have struggled, losing the last 17 straight games. But it has not been for a lack of effort as they have narrowly lost their last three games against Cal Poly, Long Beach State and UC Irvine. Last week the Titans lost to the 49ers on Wednesday, 62-57 followed by a tight home game against the Anteaters, 62-58.
The Titans are led by senior Michelle Berry who is No. 3 in the league averaging 14.1 points per game and No. 2 on the boards with 8.9 rebounds per game. Dani Craig is also averaging double-digits in points with a 10.6 average coming into Thursday's game. Craig is second on the team with 42-made 3-pointers which is second on the team to Samantha Logan's 43 treys on the season. Jade Vega has dished out a team-high 62 assists to go with a team-best 31 steals.
About the Anteaters...UC Irvine just snapped their 11-game losing streak with a 62-58 win over Cal State Fullerton this past Saturday. UCI will play CSUN this Thursday before heading out to the Islands to take on the Rainbow Wahine. Junior forward Mokun Fajemisin has been a solid presence in the post and leads the Anteaters averaging 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. She is the Big West's leader with 35 blocked shots which averages to 2.1 per game. Shereen Sutherland has poured in the most points for the Anteaters with 168 on 69-for-163 shooting from the floor with four treys and 26 made free throws. She is second on the squad with 5.5 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. Raelyn Cheung-Sutton is the lone Anteater to have started all 20 games this season for UCI. She, by far, leads the league with 126 assists and 6.3 assists per game. She also leads her team with 26 steals and logging 30.6 minutes per game.
