Men's Tennis Holds Off Sacramento State For First Dual Match Win

Box Score (html)

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (1-0, 0-0 Big West) held off Sacramento State to win their first dual match of the season, 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. In a tight battle of a match, five of the six singles matches went to three sets.

The Hornets swept the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. But Hawai'i battled back in singles getting wins on courts 1 through 4 for the win. UH's No. 4 Igor Kolaric evened the match at 1-1 with a straight set win over Sacramento State's Uli Vollath, 6-2, 7-6 (1). For Kolaric, it marked his first win over Vollath after falling twice to him earlier in their careers in Germany.

Hawai'i's Marcel Chan then gave UH its first lead of the day, defeating Kasparas Zemaitelis in three sets on the No. 3 court. Chan dropped the first set, 2-6, but came back to take the next two, 6-4, 6-3. UH's No. 1 Felix Albert then edged out the Hornets' Mikus Losbergs in three sets. Albert fell in the first set (3-6) but tied things up by winning the second set (6-3). The third set was an evenly fought battle that went to a tie breaker in which Albert held off Losbergs 7-5 to win the third set, 7-6.

Sacramento State then knotted the match at 3-3 by getting a pair of wins on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. The Hornets' Christopher Clayton defeated Ruben Blattner, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 while Donald Hall held off UH's Joakim Pinola, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

It all came down the final singles match of the day on the No. 2 court, between UH's Kai Wehnelt and Sac State's Joaquin Marquez. The two players played hard all match long with Marquez taking the first set by winning a tie-breaker, 8-6. But Wehnelt fought right back, winning the second set also by a tie-breaker, 7-4 to level things at a set apiece. Wehnelt then got one break in the third set and hung on to win 6-4 in the third set to capture UH's first win of the season.

The Rainbow Warriors continue their busy weekend playing No. 55 San Francisco on Saturday at 10:00 am, Utah on Sunday at 12:00 pm and BYU on Monday at 10:00 am.
