HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team has a busy week ahead as it competes in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Hawaii Pacific section Challenger Men's Wild Card Tournament from Jan. 11-15. The Rainbow Warriors will play four consecutive days of dual matches, beginning on Friday, Jan. 15 against Sacramento State at 3:00 pm, No. 55 San Francisco on Jan. 16 at 10:00 am, Utah on Jan. 17 at 12:00 pm and BYU on Jan. 18 at 10:00 am.
The USTA Wild Card Tournament will be held at the Oahu Club in Honolulu. It is a men's open tournament in which all 11 Rainbow Warriors will be in action. Overall there are 32 men battling it out in the five day tourney.
Sacramento State will play their first dual match of the season this week when they make their way to Honolulu. In doubles, the Hornets' duo of Kasparas Zemaitelis and Mikus Losbergs enter the 2016 season ranked at No. 30 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) first poll of the year. They had an outstanding fall season in which they recorded an 8-1 record together—including winning the Aggie Invitational championship.
The 55
th-ranked USF Dons will also open their 2016 season in Honolulu. Prior to facing the Rainbow Warriors, San Francisco will play Utah. In singles, senior Vasco Valverde recorded an 18-9 overall record while going 13-6 in dual matches and he was 10-5 at No. 5. Fellow seniors Nils Skajaa and Thomas Takemoto posted 12-12 and 10-10 overall records last year as juniors.
Utah opens their 2016 season in the Islands. They will play USF before taking on Hawai'i on Jan. 17. Matt Cowley is the lone Ute returning for this year. Last season, He was 13-6 overall, going 10-5 at No. 6 in dual matches.
After last week's opening Rainbow Warrior Invitational,
Joakim Pinola led UH with a 2-1 record in singles. Pinola knocked off a pair of Nebraska players in straight sets on the final two days of the tourney.
Felix Albert came through with a tough win over the Cornhuskers' Andrew Dzulynsky in a three-set thriller, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4). In doubles, the UH duo of
Igor Kolaric and
Spencer Travalino earned the 'Bows' lone win in the tournament, edging out Florida State's Jake Albo and Jose Gracia, 8-7.
