Monk Berger stopped a penalty kick but San Francisco scored a goal in each half to beat the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team 2-0 on Sunday at Nogoesco Stadium. The 'Bows, shutout for the second straight game, fall to 1-4-1 while the Dons improve to 4-1-1.
USF had its way on the UH flank for most of the match, creating numerous scoring chances with two materializing in goals. The Dons got their first goal when Samantha Jehnings and Tiara Webb hooked up in the 35
th minute. Jehnings got around the left flank and into the box, laying off a low pass that Webb redirected into the side netting.
USF stepped into the driver's seat early in the second half, netting its second goal in similar fashion in the 52
nd minute. Alex Lugas snuck into the goal box and tapped home a low, driven service from Jessica Nakae to put her team up 2-0.
The 'Bows had a handful of scoring chances in the match's first 15 minutes but eventually the possession and scoring opportunities all came from the Dons. Berger had a solid day in net despite allowing the two goals. She posted five saves on USF's 22 shots including a stellar penalty kick save in the 21
st minute. She parried Sonja Giraud's well-struck ball toward the side netting outside the left post to preserve the early tie.
UH's best chance of the match came in the second half. Trailing by just a goal,
Storm Kenui received a pass just to the left of the penalty spot but her bid on net sailed over the crossbar.
Kama Pascua was the most active attacker for the 'Bows, leading the team with three shots, two on target.
UH returns home and next takes the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 12 versus CSU Bakersfield. Kickoff at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
