Box Score (html)HILLSBORO, Ore. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team took to the road for the first time this season but came up empty in a 1-0 defeat to Portland State on Friday at Hillsboro Stadium. The 'Bows fall to 1-3-1 while the Vikings notch their first win to improve to 1-3.
The Rainbow Wahine had the better of Portland State in the first half to the tune of 11 shots with eight on target. It were the Vikings though that took advantage of their opportunity as Megan Myers scored after a scrum in front of the UH goal in the 28
th minute. PSU keeper Angela Haluska foiled the 'Bows time and time again and would finish the game with 11 saves.
Neither team would see their attacks materialize for much of the second half until Portland State nearly extended its one-goal lead in the 70
th minute. Morgan Matthews' touch off a flank service inside the six-yard box went off the crossbar and was cleared off the line
10 minutes later the 'Bows nearly put home the equalizer when they were awarded a free kick at midfield.
Lidia Battaglia dropped her service over the Viking backline to the foot of
Storm Kenui, but Kenui couldn't finish as the ball trickled wide of the post.
Undaunted, Hawai'i continued to attack and had arguably its best chance to score just minutes from full time.
Sonest Furtado controlled a through ball inside of the box but her shot ricocheted off a PSU defender.
Tiana Fujimoto found the loose ball just several feet in front of the goal line but her shot was saved by Haluska.
Monk Berger had three saves in net for the 'Bows.
UH finishes its two-game road trip at San Francisco, facing the Dons on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT (8:00 a.m. HT).
