COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior football team delivered a solid effort against defending national champion and concensus No.1 Ohio State, but the Buckeyes proved too much to contain, handing UH its first loss of the season, 38-0 on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
Despite the scoreline, the Hawai'
i (1-1) defense featured a handful of strong individual performances including Benetton Fonua's team-leading 12 tackles with Marrell Jackson adding 11 of his own. The defense would also force two fumbles by the OSU (2-0) offense. The 'Bows showed promise early in the first quarter on both sides of the ball, posting a 36-yard opening drive and holding the Buckeyes scoreless until the 3:25 mark.
Max Wittek hooked up with
Dylan Collie for a 29-yard gain on the first play of the game.
Wittek finished the game completing 7-of-24 passes, totaling 67 yards. Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones completed 12-of-18 passes for 111 yards, while splitting time under center with sophomore J.T. Barrett who threw for 70 yards and completed 8-of-15 passes.
Hawai'i struggled throughout the second quarter, allowing the Buckeyes' second touchdown at the 4:04 mark after a nine-play drive. The 'Bows had a chance to spark a comeback near the end of the first half until Wittek threw his second interception of the quarter, sending the 'Bows to the locker room down 14-0.
The Rainbow Warriors posted their third turnover after a Wittek sack-fumble on the UH six yard line, and though the 'Bows were able to avoid an Ohio State touchdown with a goal-line stand, the Buckeyes would go up 17-0 early in the third quarter after a successful field goal attempt.
Elliott would once again prove to be the Buckeyes' go-to man, as Ohio State's opening 17-play fourth quarter drive would culminate in the junior's third rushing touchdown of the game, giving OSU the 24-0 advantage.
The Buckeyes took advantage of Hawai'i's mistakes after a fumbled UH exchange resulted in a touchdown return for Ohio State and a 31-0 lead. In a span of less than two minutes, the home team would again get into the endzone and complete the scoring.
Ikaika Woolsey replaced Wittek at quarterback late in the fourth quarter, completing one of his two passes for 18 yards. The Rainbow Warriors' 85 passing yards marked the first time that Hawai'i has been held to under 100 yards in 231 consecutive games.
The Buckeyes finished with a 363-165 yardage advantage.
The Rainbow Warriors return to Aloha Stadium next weekend to face UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
