HONOLULU –
Kama Pascua scored in the 95
th minute to lift the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team to its first win, a 1-0 overtime victory over Denver and with it the Outrigger Resorts No Ka 'Oi title.
UH (1-2-1) finished the three-team tournament with a win and a tie with Pascua voted the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Also named to the all-tournament team were
Lidia Battaglia,
Storm Kenui,
Monk Berger, and
Sarah Lau.
The victory was also Berger's first shutout since her freshman year, posting five saves on the evening.
Both teams had a handful of opportunities to score in regulation but with nothing materializing, the game headed to overtime making it three-for-three in overtime matches in the tournament.
The 'Bows got in the win column just under the midway point of the first extra frame when TJ Reyno found Pascua in the left side of the penalty box. Pascua cut inside then delivered a strike low and to the near post that beat Denver (0-3-1) keeper Cassidy Rey (8 saves).
The 'Bows outshot the Pioneers 21-13, getting at Denver early in the match with several chances from
Storm Kenui and four corner kicks in the first 10 minutes.
The intensity started to pick up in the second half which eventually led to a yellow card issued to Kenui from an altercation at midfield.
Kenui and the 'Bows were not to be distracted though and stayed the course through regulation and into overtime.
The 'Bows now head out on the road for the first time, playing Portland State on Friday, Sept. 4 and San Francisco on Sunday, Sept. 6.
