Box Score (html)HONOLULU –
Lauren Takai put home a late goal off a free kick deflection, but it came as little consolation as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team fell 5-1 to No. 18 California, Sunday in the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The 'Bows were coming off a promising one-goal defeat two nights ago to No. 3 Stanford, but couldn't ride any of the momentum into Sunday night. Cal dominated possession to the tune of a 21-4 shot advantage, leaving the 'Bows with little opportunity to form an attack.
Arielle Ship scored a hat trick for the Golden Bears (1-1), netting her three goals all in the first half to give her team a 3-0 halftime lead. Takai's goal came in the 85
th minute after she found a loose ball right at her feet following a UH free kick and promptly slotted it into the back of the net.
After several weather delays causing the match to start 45 minutes late, Ship opened the scoring early, taking a shot around the penalty spot and beating UH keeper
Monk Berger to the far post. Ship added her second goal midway through the half on a one-touch finish from Ifeoma Onumonu, then ripped another far post shot by Berger to lift Cal to a 3-0 halftime lead.
Cal all but closed the door in the 62nd minute when Guro Bergsvand was
the beneficiary of a nice combination play inside the UH penalty area by Onumonu and Emma Fletcher, scoring to put the Bears up 4-0. Berger's busy night in net for the 'Bows (0-2) amounted to four saves while Cal starter Emily Boyd posted a clean sheet in her 75 minutes of action. Maddie Julian spelled Boyd in the 75
th minute and gave up the goal to Takai.
Monday's BYU vs. Stanford match concludes the tournament, but the 'Bows now look toward next week's Outrigger Resorts No Ka 'Oi where they will face Wyoming and Denver.
