HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team came within 18 minutes of the biggest upset in program history, but two late goals spelled doom as the 'Bows lost 2-1 to No.3 Stanford, Friday in the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Sonest Furtado scored for the 'Bows just 31 seconds into the game, the fourth fastest goal in UH history. She intercepted an errant pass in the backline then slipped a shot under Stanford goalkeeper Jane Campbell into the back of the net.

The lead stood until the 73rd minute as the 'Bows held off numerous chances on goal by the Cardinal who had the better of Hawai'i for most of the match. Monk Berger shined in net for the Rainbow Wahine, recording seven saves and keeping Stanford at bay.

The back finally broke when the 'Bows committed a foul in the penalty box and Stanford was awarded a penalty kick. Andi Sullivan's initial attempt was saved by Berger but the shot rebounded right back to Sullivan's feet who finished to tie the game.

With the Cardinal continuing to press, Stanford took its first lead less than seven minutes later when, following a stellar near post save from Berger, Alana Cook got the ball at the far post and finished underneath the cross bar.

After Furtado's early goal, Stanford had their way with the 'Bows down both flanks as UH bent but did not break. Stanford had 10 shots in their goalless first half.

The Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic resumes on Sunday when the 'Bows face No. 18 California at 5:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Golden Bears fell to BYU 2-0 in the opening match of tonight's doubleheader.
