AUSTIN, Texas – University of Hawai'i thrower
Alex Porlier Langlois qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after her ninth place finish in the shot put competition of the NCAA West Preliminary Round, Saturday, at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
One day after failing to post a mark in the discus competition, Porlier Langlois redeemed herself with a throw of 52-1¾ (15.89m) on her first attempt. She fouled on her next two throws but her mark was good enough to finish in the Top 12 and qualify for nationals.
The St. Cesaire, Quebec native is the first Rainbow Wahine shot put thrower to qualify for nationals since Waynette Mitchell qualified for the 1974 AIAW Championships. She is also the first UH athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships since triple jumper Amanda Alvarez in 2013.
Sophomore
Rachel Toliver also competed for UH on Saturday, placing 23
rd in the triple jump. The Los Angeles, Calif., native jumped 40-11½ (12.48m) – her second best mark of the season – but needed to jump one inch further to place in the Top 12 to qualify for NCAAs.
Iowa State's Christina Hillman won the shot put competition with a throw of 56-3 (17.14m) while Texas State's Allie Saunders placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 44-9 (13.64m).
Porlier Langlois is the lone Rainbow Wahine who will compete at the NCAA Championships, June 10-13, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The shot put competition is scheduled to run Thursday, June 11 at 5:40 p.m. PT (2:40 p.m. HT).
