WACO, Texas—University of Hawai'i women's tennis player Cindy Nguyen will compete in her second-straight NCAA Women's Singles Championship which runs from May 20-25 at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center. Nguyen will open the tourney with a first round match against Clemson's Beatrice Gumulya at 1:00 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday. Links for live stats, a live video stream, and a live in-game blog are all listed at the bottom of this release.

Last year as a freshman, Nguyen became the first Rainbow Wahine to ever earn a spot in the NCAA tournament. She followed her groundbreaking rookie campaign this season as a sophomore by posting a 15-3 record in dual matches, exclusively at No. 1 singles. Her premier victory of the 2015 season came against then-21st ranked Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan, 7-6, 4-6, 8-6.  She is riding a seven-match win streak into her opening contest of the 64-player singles bracket. Nguyen recorded a perfect 7-0 against Big West opposition en route to being the first Rainbow Wahine to be voted conference Player of the Year. She also became the first women's tennis player from UH to be named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Southwest Region Player to Watch. Nguyen collected three Big West Athlete of the Week awards during the 2015 campaign and her five career citations already places her among the all-time top 10.

For the second straight season, Nguyen earned the Big West's automatic bid into the NCAA tourney by being the highest-ranked player from the conference. She ended the season ranked No. 95 in the ITA, but was ranked as high as 68 earlier in the season on March 10. She is one of 15 automatic qualifiers that will compete against 49 at-large selections.  All singles players must have a minimum of 13 completed singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection. She is the only player from the Big West to be competing in the tournament.

Nguyen finished her sophomore campaign with a 15-3 record in dual matches exclusively at No. 1 singles.  She rides a seven-match unbeaten streak into her opening contest of the 64-player singles bracket.  Nguyen went a perfect 7-0 against Big West opposition, and her premier victory of the 2015 season came against then-21st ranked Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan, 7-6, 4-6, 8-6.  Nguyen collected three Big West Athlete of the Week awards during the 2015 campaign and her five career citations already places her among the all-time top 10. Nguyen was ranked as high as No. 68 in the country by the ITA on March 10.

Nguyen gives the Big West a representative in the singles championship for the fourth straight year, and eighth time in the last 10 years. She is the third player from the Big West to play in the NCAA tournament twice in her career

Nguyen will battle Gumulya, a senior from Jakarta, Indonesia. Gumulya is currently ranked No. 60 and has recorded a 28-9 overall record this season. She tallied a 19-6 mark in dual matches. Gumulya is a two-time All-ACC selection (Second Team in 2015, Third Team in 2014), and she finished her senior campaign on a roll, winning 10 of her last 11 decisions. Originally, Nguyen was to play Georgia's Kennedy Shaffer, but she pulled out of the tournament.
