Stats (Pepperdine)GULF SHORES, Ala. – A magnificent season came to an end for the University of Hawai'i women's sand volleyball team who were eliminated by Pepperdine, 3-2, on Friday from the AVCA Team Championship.
After losing to Long Beach State to open the competition, the 'Bows regrouped and won a win-or-go-home losers bracket match against Florida State, 3-2.
Hawai'i turned right around to face Pepperdine who had themselves just lost to fall into the losers bracket. UH fought tooth and nail, winning at the No. 4 flight to draw the match even at one win apiece.
A trip to the last four was there for the taking as both the No. 1 and No. 2 flights headed to a fifth set. On the one court,
Brittany Tiegs and
Nikki Taylor rallied to send the match to a deciding set but didn't have much left in the tank in a 21-12, 20-22, 15-5 loss to Kellie Woolever and Kelley Larsen. On the two court,
Olivia Urban and
Katie Spieler likewise fell in three sets as Pepperdine clinched the win with its third victory.
Heather Boyan and
Lara Schreiber won an entertaining match to close the day, beating Samantha Cash and Corinne Quiggle 12-21, 21-18, 15-10.
The 'Bows, who close the season at 18-3, will have Saturday off before gearing up for Sunday's pairs competition.
