Box Score (html)IRVINE, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team fell to UC Irvine, 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif.
The Rainbow Warriors (6-12, 0-4 Big West) battled hard, but were unable to record a point against the Anteaters (18-12, 3-1 Big West). In doubles, UCI's No. 2 duo of Jonathan Hammel and Tyler Pham started the match with a 6-1 win over UH's
Joakim Pinola and
Nils Schuhmann. UC Irvine then captured the first point of the day with a 6-2 win on the No. 1 court with UCI's Justin Agbayani and Jonathan Poon defeating
Marcel Chan and
Carter Lam.
The Anteaters went on to take all six of the singles matches. In the longest match of the day, UH's Pinola was close to winning in straight sets on the No. 5 court. Pinola took the first set over UCI's Jonathan Hammel, 6-2, but Hammel held off Pinola in the second set 7-6 in a tie-breaker to even the match at a set a piece. Hammel then won the third set, 6-2 to complete the team sweep. Hawai'i's No. 2
Chas Okamoto fell to UC Irvine's Pham in a tight two-set match, 6-4, 6-4 while UH's No. 4 Chan lost a tough match to Shuhei Shibahara, 6-4, 7-5.
The Rainbow Warriors will stay on the road to close the regular at UC Riverside this Sunday, April 19 at the SRC South Tennis Courts in Riverside, Calif.
