SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (6-11, 0-3 Big West) fell to No. 60 UC Santa Barbara, 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Rec Cen Courts in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Gauchos (8-7, 1-1 Big West) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point taking first two matches. TheGauchos' No. 3 team of Morgan Mays and Cody Riminton knocked off
Chas Okamoto and
Fabian Woehrl, 6-2, while on the No. 1 court, UCSB's Nathan Eshmade and Erik Johnsson defeated UH's
Carter Lam and
Marcel Chan, 6-2 to take the point. UH's duo of
Nils Schuhmann and
Joakim Pinola battled hard, but their match went unfinished at 5-4.
In singles, reigning Big West Athlete of the Week Schuhmann, won UH's sole match of the day by defeating Ziad Sultan in the top spot, 6-2, 6-0. Lam fought hard but UCSB's Mays edged him out, 6-4, 6-4 on the No. 3 court, while Eshmade held off Okamoto, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot.
Hawai'i will return to Honolulu and have a week off before returning to California to play their final two Big West regular season matches at UC Irvine (Apr. 17) and UC Riverside (Apr. 19).
