Photo GalleryHONOLULU – The top three pairs for the University of Hawai'i women's sand volleyball team advanced to the gold elimination round to highlight day 1 of the Queen of the Beach Challenge on Friday at the Queen's Beach Sandbox. Teams from USC, California, Nebraska, and Hawai'i all participated.

The pairs of
Brittany Tiegs and
Nikki Taylor,
Katie Spieler and
Olivia Urban, and
Hannah Rooks and
Sammie Brown all went undefeated to finish first in their respective pools and will play for the gold bracket championship on Saturday.

Sydney Shinn and
Gianna Guinasso, and
Lara Schreiber and
Heather Boyan also advanced and will play for the silver bracket title.

Outside of a 24-22 first set win against USC's Olivia Asprey and Marielle Bagnard, Tiegs and Taylor were dominant on the day. They won set two 21-8 then overwhelmed the Cal pair of Katie Regalia and
Ashley Johnson, 21-3, 21-11. Spieler and Urban also swept their two matches in convincing fashion and Rooks posted 26 kills to help her team to a three-set win to open the day. Rooks and Brown later swept Cal's Sarah Cole and Emily Lunt 21-18, 21-16 to close their day.

Bracket play starts on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and will take place on four courts at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex.
