CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The No. 1 University of Hawai'i women's sand volleyball team opened the USAV Collegiate Challenge. After defeating Grand Canyon, 4-1 and sweeping Texas Christian University, 5-0 in dual play, UH opened the first half of the single-elimination pairs bracket.
The SandBows (4-0) were led by All-American pair
Brittany Tiegs and
Nikki Taylor, who finished the morning 4-0 after sweeping the Antelopes' pair Phelps/Dugan, 21-12, 21-19 and TCU's Gowen/Peters in a landslide, 21-9, 21-16. Lara Shreiber and
Mikayla Tucker also went undefeated for the Rainbow Wahine, taking down Grand Canyon's Ausmus/Glennie, 22-20, 21-15 and the Frogs' Pickens/Grantham, 21-9, 21-12 to follow.
UH dropped just four sets total to Grand Canyon, as the Antelopes' pair of Tuner/Erichsen inched past
Olivia Urban and
Katie Spieler in the first set, 18-21 only to be upset in the following two, 21-15, 15-11.
Hannah Rooks Sammie Brown took down Green/Razo in Set 1, 21-13 and fell short to the Antelopes in Set 2, 19-21, but in the end were able to cap the victory in the third by a five-point margin, 15-10. Grand Canyon's only victory of the day came after narrowly edging out SandBows' Kaiwi Schucht and Hannah Zalopaly, 21-18, 21-13.
In the afternoon, the Rainbow Wahine shut out TCU 5-0. In addition to Tiegs/Taylor and Shreiber/Tucker's victories, the pairs of Urban/Spelier, Rooks/Brown, and Chow/Boyan all pulled off two-set sweeps with scores of 21-13, 21-4; 21-13, 21-10, and 21-12, 21-6, respectively.
Pairs from Pepperdine, CSU Bakersfield and Grand Canyon, as well as TCU and Hawaii, were all placed in a 32-team bracket for a single-elimination pairs championship. Four of the SandBows' six teams will go on to compete in the second round on Sunday morning.
Urban and Speiler along with Rooks and Brown, swept both games in the first round over Pepperdine (21-10, 21-15) and CSU Bakersfield (21-17, 21-14), respectively. Â After falling short in the second set to CSUB, Schreiber and Tucker came back to win it in the third, 21-10, 17-21, 15-9. The three pairs will go on to compete in the second round tomorrow along with the Tiegs and Taylor pair, which received an automatic bye. Â
