Men's Tennis Falls To USF, Idaho In Pacific Mountain Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The University of Hawaii`i Rainbow Warrior tennis fell to San Francisco, 4-0 and Idaho, 4-1 on day one of the Pacific Mountain Invitational this morning at the Brookside Country Club. 

The Dons got off to the early lead in doubles play. USF's No. 1 pair of Thomas Takemoto and Vasco Valverde swung past UH's Marcel Chan and Joakim Pinola, 6-1.  The 'BowsNils Schuhmann and Carter Lam played a hard match against The Don's #31 duo of Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa, falling in a close set, 6-4, which gave the USF the doubles point.

USF would continue riding their momentum in singles play as they gained victories as UH's Lam fell to James Tallman, 6-0, 6-4. UH's Schuhmann put up a great effort, but he too fell against USF's Bernardo Saraiva 6-0, 6-3. It was up to the 'Bows Pinola to keep UH's match hopes alive against The Don's Christian Brockstedt, but Pinola fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, thus sealing USF's victory. 

The Vandals took the early lead as they earned the doubles point to begin the match. Idaho's No. 1 duo of Jackson Varney and Cristobal Ramos defeated UH's Carter Lam and Nils Schuhmaan, 6-2. The 'Bows' Felix Albert and Chas Okamoto played tough, but came up short against Odon Barta and Felipe Fonseca, 6-4, thus giving Idaho the doubles point. The match on the No. 3 court did not finish due to the Vandals winning the other two matches.

In singles play, UH's Okamoto gave a tremendous performance, cruising past Idaho's Jackson Varney, 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 6 position, Pinola gave an intense three-set thrill against Vandals' Alberto Sanz, winning it 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. 

The Rainbow Warriors will now face Grand Canyon on the last day of the Pacific Mountain Invitational in Stockton, Calif. on Sunday, Mar. 1 at 3:00 p.m PT.
